In 1986, the Reagan administration began to heavily promote drug testing in the workplace as part of the escalating War on Drugs. Since then, drug testing has proliferated from safety-sensitive jobs to non-safety sensitive jobs to pre-employment job testing to suspicionless drug testing of public high school students to mandatory drug testing of applicants for public benefits. Drug testing is also a near universal feature of the criminal justice system in the United States, with most probationers and parolees required to undergo drug testing regardless of the nature of their underlying offense or history of drug use.
Most people are aware of the current scrutinty the MLB players and association is going through with the use of "performance enhancing drugs" aka steroids...

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Map, News) - Tiger Woods said Wednesday that drug testing on the PGA Tour will start July 8, and he is about halfway through the tour's anti-doping manual sent to players earlier this month.
"It's unbelievable how thick this thing is," Woods said after his pro-am round at the Target World Challenge, the final tournament of the year. "It's a lot to get through. I haven't gotten to the drug list yet."
But he's not worried about the testing, which will start the Tuesday after his AT&T National at Congressional, saying he has been on the same nutritional program for years.
"I think it will help," Woods said of drug testing. "I certainly don't think it can hurt the game."
